Everybody Starts Somewhere...

Location:
New Britain, CT, USA
Type of Gig:
House Party

Back in high school I was in an original band that was really cool and a lot of fun...because we were all under age we weren't gigging at all, so of course we were absolutely pumped when the bassist said one of his buddies wanted us to play at a house party. Me being as naive as I was at the time and the way the bassist described other parties this guy had I really thought it was gonna be like in the movies and that there'd be tons of people there and tons of smoking hot chicks and getting laid would be all but guaranteed. Oh my, I could not have been more wrong...

So the day of the gig we all meet at our drummers house which is where we all rehearsed and was in the same town as the house party, so we met up, loaded all our gear, and set out to the house. We get there and it's a 3 family house in one of the worst parts of town. Anyways we get there, and there is NOBODY there. No worries, we got there early to set up, things would be happening later I thought....anyways we were told we'd be setting up outside. Ordinarily, that'd be no problem, however it had rained really heavy the night before and even that morning, and we had to lug all our gear around the side of the house into the backyard, and this involved going up and down a relatively long and steep hill. Because of the rain, within short order we kept sliding and falling down with our gear, and before the end of the first trip all of us and all of our gear was absolutely CAKED in mud. No joke, just absolutely covered. We finally managed to get set up and everything. As time goes by, I'm noticing that there is literally still no one there. Ah, I figured, it's still kind of early. As more time went by, 3 young guys showed up and just stood with there backs to us against the fence. We finally start playing, and those are the only people there!!!! As we played maybe a total of 10 people walked into the yard, stopped and stared blankly at us for a few seconds, then either went inside or left. So finally after we were done playing and we realized that it had been a complete waste of time and nothing like we thought it was gonna be and that no one else was gonna show up, we began the laborious process of again slipping and sliding down the hill, getting all of our gear caked in mud once again.

As if all that wasn't bad enough, as we were loading out, the host of the party (the guy our bassist knew) who had been completely absent the whole time (I honestly have no idea where he was the whole time) came up to us and said that it was a fundraiser for some chick he knew that was sick and wanted $10 from each of us. We all just stared blankly at him. It's funny cuz in any other circumstance I'm sure at least one of us would have gone off on him, but it was like something out of a sitcom, we all just stared at him for a second, then finished loading up without saying a word to him and took off. (Needless to say though we all DID have QUITE A FEW words with our bassist who got us into the whole thing to begin with afterwards haha).
